The Gold Rush

1) The Gold Rush is a silent comedy film that was produced and directed by Charlie Chaplin in 1925. In class we discussed his role as the "Little Tramp", a scraggly, poor man who's image was unlike his personality. He was very shy and a giving gentleman, especially when it came to the ladies. His love and kindness was directed towards Georgia, a girl from a saloon, who in the beginning looked past him because of his appearance but later gained affection for him. Though Charlie's character came face to face with death when on his discovery for gold, fell in love with, and faced many obstacles, but in the end, he triumphed and became rich.

The article discussed that the Gold Rush was Charlie Chaplin's most profound film and the one he wanted to be most remembered by. The film took 17 months to make and cost nearly one million dollars, while many silent films only took one month with low budgets. The film originally had no sound until Chaplin composed music it in 1942 and it became an even bigger sensation. Though the film portrayed comical suspense, there was an underlying history behind it. The film's history was about the gold rush which originally took place in 1898. Gold prospectors traveled by packs of hundreds during the cold, harsh winter in attempts to find gold and make money.

3)The article relates to the screening because it is basically a written "play by play" of what is going on in the film. The article is just more informative about the history & purpose of the Gold Rush.

4)The Gold Rush has made me more informative about not only silent films or famous films in the early years, but also the history behind the films. Films in the early times were based off events that occurred in history like wars, battles and etc. The book did not give so much information about Charlie Chaplin or the film, which was a let down but the class discussions sufficed. The discussions made me have a stronger love for silent films and Charlie Chaplin and gain an open mind towards historical events in America.
